Abstract
752,448. Ammunition projectiles. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Dec. 13, 1954, No. 35990/54. Class 9(1) [Also in Group XXII] A non-explosive projectile having an outer case, e.g. of steel, enclosing a core of more brittle material, e.g..tungsten carbide, has the outer case so arranged around the core that the core is subjected to longitudinal and/or lateral pressure by the case. The projectile.is formed in an annular die 1 whose internal face is flared towards the top to receive the flared end of the case 2. A cushion 3, e.g. of aluminium, is inserted into the case, before introducing the core 4. and a closure member 6 by means of a presser 5. The member 6 has a chamfered edge and a coaxial cylindrical projection 7 which enters the presser 5. Downward movement of the presser is continued, subjecting the case to tension and forcing the flared end inwards to engage the member 6, the finished projectile being received by a conveyer belt (not shown) as it leaves the die. Before assembly, the case may have an inside diameter less than the diameter of the core along the greater part of its length. A preheated case may be used which shrinks on cooling after assembly.
