Abstract
680,842. Cartridge wads. ESTEBAN, J. F. REYNOLDS-. June 22, 1950 [June 23, 1949], No. 15646/50. Class 9(i) A wad for a shot cartridge comprises two cork discs 1, 2 with stems 3, 4 between which is placed a ring 5 of felt impregnated with paraffin. When the discs are pressed on to the felt ring, the stems 3, 4 compress the underlying part of the ring to form an annular rib 8 surrounding an air space 6. In modifications the stems 3, 4 may be frusto-conical or have a stepped profile. To make the felt rings, bands of the required width and length are cut from felt 4 to 5mm. thick and put in a paraffin bath at about 70‹C. The bands are then fed between two rollers to remove excess paraffin. From the rollers they pass to a heated tube where they are bent to form a cylinder the edges being held together by the paraffin. The felt tubes then pass to two spaced cold tubes and as they emerge are cut into rings. The wads are assembled by placing the elements in a plate, which is then heated to render the felt rings malleable, the cork discs are then placed in position and the assembled wads passed through a cold press.
