Abstract

640,998. Shaping capsules. BRUUN, O. J. Aug. 27, 1947, No. 23695. [Class 100 (ii)] A machine for the production of cup-shaped bottle capsules and the like of thin pliable metal foil comprises a ring portion 4 having a smooth convergingly coned bore p through which the capsule is adapted to be passed to partially compress the folds in the capsule which are afterwards fully compressed by passage into a matrix 5 so that a capsule with a relatively smooth surface is formed. An annular support 1 having inner and outer parts 1a and 1b is provided with serrations m and k which engage similar serrations n on a support 2. A blank is fed between supports 1 and 2 which are then moved relatively together while a punch 6 moves axially to carry the blank through the support 2, the serrations m of which are continued along the bore O. The blank then forms a conical cup having a series of folds around its periphery. The folds are flattened by engagement with the bore p of the ring-portion 4, after which the cup is then passed on the end of the punch 6 into the matrix 5 having a conical bore q which compresses the folds so that they lie flat in overlapping relationship. The cup is removed from the matrix between a plunger 7 and the punch 6 which are both moved axially to the right. The cup is stripped from the punch 6 by the edge of the ring-portion 4. Alternatively, the punch 6 may be provided with an ejector rod or compressed air passed axially through the punch may be used to strip the capsule from the punch 6, or a U-shaped extractor member may engage the punch 6 and remove the cup to a position opposite a reciprocating plunger which nests the cups in a storage compartment. The matrix 5, ring-portion 4, and the support 2, may'be formed integrally.
