639,793. Boxes. SANFORD, R. S. July 31, 1947, No. 20879. Convention date, May 23, 1946. [Class 18] The upper ends of the sides of a tubular carton are scored so that when pressed inwardly, an outwardly directed flange is formed to which end closing flaps are secured by adhesive. The closing of the filled carton is carried out in a machine in which horizontal plates 60-63 are advanced against the carton top on four sides simultaneously causing opposite panels 50, 51 of the sides to fold in between adjacent panels 57, 58. A ram 65 presses the flange 31 into a horizontal position and end closing flaps 52, 53 are folded inwardly. A second ram seals the flowable adhesive coated flange 31 and flaps 52, 53 to form a leak-proof closure. Means may be applied for heating or cooling this ram when thermoplastic sealing means are used. The carton may be' of various sectional shapes such as triangular. The bottom may be sealed in a similar manner to the top. The inset sides assist in handling the carton and the top closure may be of less width in one direction than the carton body to enable it to be gripped when packed with others. The closure flaps may be replaced by a separate sheet.
