Abstract

901,133. Cartons; packaging. IGNELL, R. L. July 1, 1960 [July 4, 1959], No. 23159/60. Classes 18 and 94(1). A carton comprises hinged panels A, B, C, D, E, F, and corner pieces G connected therebetween and hinged to the panels E, F, at least three of the panels C, D, E, F being scored or creased along a line substantially midway between, and parallel to, the adjacent edges of the panels A, B to allow the carton to be folded flat in a plane parallel to the panels A, B. The inside face of the blank shown in Fig. 1, may be coated with an impervious, heat sealable material or the blank may consist of a laminate of paper and synthetic plastic. To form the collapsed carton of Fig. 2 the blank is folded about the line m extending longitudinally of the panel C and seam zones J and j are heat sealed or glued together to form fin-like flaps which are turned over to lie against the collapsed carton. Each collapsed carton is fed from a supply 5 to a pocket 6 of an intermittently rotating turn table 7 by suction nozzles 9, 10. It passes through a tapering channel 8 which applies forces P, Fig. 3, to the panels C, D so that the carton opens to form a cuboid. Alternatively, outwardly directed forces may be applied to the panels A, B. During this operation the portions G fold about the lines d to form projecting ears. A plate 13 transfers the carton to a pocket 12 of a filling head 11 rotated at constant speed. Sealing flaps 19, 20, the former having shoulders 22, 23, swing into a horizontal position and heat seal three of the ears along a narrow zone extending thereacross and parallel to score lines l<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>1</SP>. A pressing arm 24 opens the rhombic opening of the unsealed ear and a filling tube 25 enters. After filling a flap 21 heat seals this ear. The sealed package is deflected from the head 11 by plates 26, 27 as the flaps 19, 20, 21 return to their vertical position. The package passes on to a conveyer 28 and plates 28, 29, 30, 31 fold the ears there-against after they have been supplied with adhesive through nozzles 33, 34. One ear may be left projecting to form a handle and may be provided with a line of weakness to facilitate opening the carton. To empty the carton one ear portion is cut in a line behind the sealing zone to form a spout. In a modification, Fig. 6, the blank is folded to U-shape and the top panels F1, F2 closed after filling.
