[Class 138 (i)] The actuating means for a windscreen wiper of the type in which a compound motion is imparted to the oscillatory wiper blade comprises a pair of coaxial spindles c, b, Fig. 2, of which c carries the main wiper arm and b carries a sub-arm o through which motion can be transmitted to a crank n, Fig. 4, associated with the wiper blade m which is pivotally mounted at k on the main arm j, segmental racks e, d, or equivalent means of different radii on the two spindles, and a pair of jointly movable reciprocatory racks g, h, engaging the said means for actuating the spindles. The crank n is connected to a slider p on the sub-arm o. The racks g, hare formed on a member f slidable in a housing a, and connected to any convenient source of motion. When the wiper. is in use the two spindles are oscillated at different angular rates and this causes the blade m to rock relatively to the arm j. The blade thus sweeps over a larger area of the windscreen than would be the case if the blade only had the same movement as the main arm.
