1332290 Cleaning vehicle headlamp glasses GENERAL MOTORS CORP 15 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 28074/72 Heading A4F A motor vehicle headlamp cleaning mechanism comprises a wiper blade 13 carried on one end of a cranked wiper arm 15 the other end of which is mounted to pivot on an axis 16 which lies rearwardly of the headlamp and parallel with the plane of the headlamp lens 12, and in order to press the blade 13 against the lens 12 at least a part of the arm 15 is mounted so as to be displaceable substantially normally to the plane of the lens and is spring biased for displacement rearwardly of the headlamp. The displaceable part may be formed as an extension bar 14 which carries the wiper blade 13 and is slidable along the arm 15 under the bias of springs 28 within channels in the limbs of the arm 15. Alternatively the arm may be so displaceable that its pivotal axis moves in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the lens 12. The arm 15 may be rectangular and slideable in slots at the rear of the headlamp, Fig.2 (not shown) or the arm 15 may be mounted in pivotally mounted rigid links spring biased rearwardly Fig.3 (not shown). The arm 15 may be L-shaped, one limb carrying the wiper blade 13, the other limb extending rearwardly to be secured to a bearer rod mounted in slots and displaceable rearwardly under spring bias Fig.4 (not shown) or the rod may be carried by spiral springs (65) Fig.5, (not shown). Guides 33 direct the wiper arm 15 to a position clear of the lens when not in use. The arm 15 is driven by a motor 18 through an eccentric coupling. One motor may drive two wiper mechanisms with similar motion or contrary motion. Spray nozzles may be clipped to the wiper arm 15 to supply water to wash the lens.
