Abstract
638,632. Metal containers, or cans. SHEET METAL TECHNICIANS, Ltd., and LANGTON, J. W. March 19, 1947, No. 7572. [Class 66] [Also in Group XXII] A can particularly of aluminium or aluminium alloy, is made by extruding a blank to form a container with a closed end to which a lid may be seamed or fitted. The block may be extruded to a length sufficient to form such a can 3, Fig. 1, with other cans 4, 5 having both ends open. The blank is trimmed at 6 and cut up as indicated by chain lines. The edge of the can may be beaded either internally or externally with a flat or round bead and a beaded lid may be applied internally or externally. In the case of a can 4 the bottom may be seamed on and the lid applied as above, or both ends may be seamed, or the bottom 10, Fig. 4, may be beaded at 12 and a force fit in the beaded edge 13. Various forms of rings for lever lid or other closures may be seamed on such as the ring 25, Fig. 13, to which a neck 27 is secured at 26. The neck is flanged at 28 to receive a closure. The neck may be integral with the top and the closure may be a screw cap. When parts are seamed on the joints may take any of the forms shown in Figs. 15, 16 and 17.
