Abstract

998,473. Metal cams; container closures. NATIONAL CAN CORPORATION. July 17, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 25864/61. Headings B8D and B8T. A metal can is formed with a collar 26 on which a closure 36 is seated, the closure 36 being replaceable once the can has been opened by cutting out an end 14 seamed to the can wall. The closure 36 is of plastics, e.g. polystyrene, and is designed to flex the end 14 upwards as the end is cut out. The closure 36 may have protrusions lying within the inverted U of its rim which provide vent openings for the escape of gas, Fig. 5 (not shown). Additional contents, e.g. advertising material, may be included between the members 14 and 36. The opening in the collar 26 may be non- circular, and the collar may itself be of plastics material, Fig. 7 (not shown). Instead of being seamed to the can wall as shown, the collar may be supported on an inward bead. The can base may be shaped so as to fit on the top of a similar can stacked below, Fig. 4.
