Abstract
638,581. Manufacturing metal powders. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., TAIT, W. H., and LOVE, P. P. Sept. 3, 1947, No. 24301. [Class 82(ii)] In a method of manufacturing metal powders wherein molten metal contained in an open crucible is discharged i n the form of a jet through a downwardly directed nozzle communicating with the base of the crucible, the jet of molten metal being atomized by means of a downwardly directed annular jet of air supplied from a concentric annular nozzle, and the atomized metal falling into an enclosed container of sufficient dimensions to permit of the atomized molten particles solidifying into powder before reaching the bottom of the container, the atomization is effected in the presence of hydrogen. The molten metal may be permeated with hydrogen by adding hydrogen, or a hydrogen-forming substance to the metal in the crucible or, alternatively or in addition, hydrogen may be supplied through a duct 6 to the zone 11 between the discharge nozzle 4 and the annular air jet issuing from the annular nozzle 9.
