Abstract
746,301. Atomising magnesium. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Feb. 12, 1954 [March 18, 1953], No. 4252/54. Class 82(2). Magnesium is atomised by allowing it to impinge on a rapidly rotating steel disc, the magnesium containing from 0À025 to 1À0 per cent zirconium and from 0À25 to 7À0 per cent zinc, the resultant alloys being stated to web the steel disc and not to corrode it. The magnesium is allowed to melt and to flow onto the disc in a chamber 1 in an inert atmosphere obtained by pumping a suitable gas from holder 14 via pump 17 and cooler 19 to an air turbine 21 (see Fig. 2) which causes rotation of the steel disc 27. The exhaust gas passes into the chamber 1 through exhaust 50 and the atomised metal is deposited in a settling tank 5. Any dust is removed in the cyclone 9. A push rod 42 in the bore 39 is provided to control the flow of molten metal from the pot 36, heating flames playing through holes 48 (only one shown). The disc 27 is preferably concave.
