Abstract

665,831. Coating with metals. KREIDL, W.E., (trading as KREIDL CHEMICO-PHYSICAL CO.). Feb. 28, 1948. [Nov. 4, 1941] No. 6276/48. Class 82(ii). An apparatus for coating finely divided particles with metal by condensation from the vapour phase, comprises a chamber, means for evacuating air from the chamber, heating means for generating a metallic - vapour in the chamber and means within the chamber for holding and sifting finely divided solid material to cause it to fall through the vapour. The sifting means, Fig. 1, comprises a dredge 4 pivotally mounted at 9 and oscillated by means of an electromagnet 5 and spring 10; the heating means comprises a tungsten filament 3 on which bands of metallic wire are hung to be vaporized. In a modification, Fig. 3, the sifting means comprises an annular shaker 24 operated by a solenoid 27 and the metal to be vaporized is heated by induction in a crucible 23. Mica may be coated with aluminium to form the basis of aluminium paint and the plating may be coloured by including within the chamber a small quantity of paraffin oil or wood fibre; other particles which may be coated include graphite, carbon, silica, iron and copper and other coating metals include nickel, silver and gold.
