Abstract
741,082. Atomizing metals, coating with metals. BRENNAN, J. B. Jan. 1, 1953, No. 45/53. Class 82 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] Metals are atomized by fusing the metal and passing it through an outlet orifice under such pressure that the metal is atomized. The particles, produced can be collected as powder after solidification or may be directed on to a surface whilst still in the molten or plastic condition to metallize the surface. Before the surface is coated, if it is a metal surface, it may be subjected to a reducing flame to clean it. The metal is atomized in a suitable inert gas, e.g. carbon monoxide. Aluminium, magnesium, copper and iron are disclosed as coating metals. A crucible 45 is mounted within a cylindrical pressure chamber 30 and is supplied with molten metal through a funnel. The metal is maintained molten by induction or resistance heating coils 60, 61, and the chamber 30 is water-cooled and supplied with gas under pressure through a conduit 43. Molten metal is forced through a refractory lining Sl within tubular parts 49, 11 to a nozzle 12. The latter comprises a number of orifices the axes of which are arranged so that the jets therefrom intercept one another. The specification discloses various materials suitable for the nozzle. Additional separately controllable heating coils 64-66 are provided. The sprayed metal is fed into a chamber or tower 14, Fig. 1, which may contain the inert gas at super or sub-atmospheric pressure. If metal spray coating is desired, the article to be coated is accommodated here. If powdered metal is to be produced a sufficiently large free space is provided to allow the particles to solidify.
