Abstract

636,265. Locomotive driving gear. STADDON, F. J., and RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Aug. 13, 1947, No. 22454. [Class 79 (i)] In a locomotive or like rail vehicle in which the power is transmitted from a gear box 2 to the main driving wheels through a cranked jackshaft 1 and connecting rods, one or both cranks 16 is or are removably secured to the jackshaft 1 and the main housings 3 of the shaft are secured at their innner ends to the gear box 2 and are carried at their outer ends by housings 8, Fig. 1, for the shaft bearings or by subsidiary housings 27, Fig. 2, the housings being secured in holes in the side plates 12, Fig. 1, of the locomotive or in plates 28, Fig. 2, of an inner frame, and a driving gear 15 is carried at the inner ends of the main housings and is splined on the jack shaft, whereby upon removal of one of the cranks the jackshaft can be removed axially from the gear box with out disturbing the driving gear. As shown in Figure 1 applied to a compression ignition engine driven locomotive, the jackshaft 1 is splined at 17 to carry the driving gear 15, on the hub of which is carried bearing bushes 20 between the gear and the main housings 3. The housings 3 are secured by flanges 4 to the gear box 2 and at their outer ends are slidingly mounted on housings 8 and carry seal rings 14. The housings 8 are secured by flanges 10 to the locomotive side plates 12 and carry bearings 9 on the jackshaft 1. The cranks 16 are splined to the jackshaft 1 and are each secured by a cup shaped cap 23. In another embodiment shown in Fig. 2 an extended jackshaft 1 is mounted at each end in the bearings 9 carried by the housings 8, whilst the main housings 3 are slidingly mounted on the subsidiary housings 27 secured to the inner frame 28.
