Abstract

635,842. Undercarriages for aircraft. ELECTRO - HYDRAULICS, Ltd., NEILSON, C. B. V., and HOARE, R. G. June 5, 1947, Nos. 14916 and 33194. [Class 4] An undercarriage of the type comprising a plurality of landing wheels carried by a bogie or frame pivotally mounted at the lower end of the undercarriage leg is provided with means which oppose the moment on the bogie tending to lift the rear wheels when the brakes are applied. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the bogie 1 is carried by a pivot pin 2, and the anchor plate of each of the rear wheel brakes is connected by a link 5 to a downward extension 6 of the undercarriage leg 7, so that when the brakes are applied the forces in the links 5 oppose the tendency of the rear wheels to lift. According to a second construction, Fig. 5, the anchor plate of each front brake is connected by a link 8 to a lever 21 actuating the shoes of a brake engaging the pivot pin 2, so that an opposing torque is applied to the bogie frame. Instead of being operated automatically, the frame brake may be applied directly by the pilot. In order to reduce tyre wear during tight ground turns, the front or rear pair of wheels may be arranged to castor, or alternatively may be raised clear of the ground by a hydraulic jack.
