[Class 103 (i).] Fluid-pressure; shoes acting on drums.-B r a k e mechanism of the kind described in Specification 341,007, [Group XXXIII], for effecting differential braking of the wheels of an aeroplane for steering comprises a slotted beam K pivoted to the rods of pistons A, A<1> which transmit the pressure to the brakes hydraulically, the pressure being applied to the pistons by a lever I which passes through the slot in the beam and has a universal pivot at its lower end whereby the point of engagement of the lever with the beam may be varied to vary the ratio of the pressures on the pistons. The lever may be operated manually or by the skid as described in Specification 297,429, [Class 4, Aeronautics]. When the pistons are in the retracted position, orifices in the cylinders are uncovered by which liquid is supplied from the reservoir R. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a modified construction in which the pressure is transmitted to the pistons through a roller which is adjustable by a separate member and is disposed between a beam connecting the piston rods and a second beam connected to the pressure applying lever. Further, expanding shoe brakes are described in which the operated end of one shoe is adjacent the pivoted end of another shoe whereby the frictional reaction on each shoe tends to increase the application of the shoe. As shown in Fig. 5 (Cancelled), shoes S<1>, S<2>, pivoted respectively at A<1>, A<2> on the fixed anchor plate are applied by hydraulic cylinders C<1>, C<2> carried by the plate. The pivoted ends of the shoes embrace the plate or are socketed therein to avoid twisting efforts on the plate. A similar arrangement of three shoes is also shown. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
