Abstract

296,798. Boughton, E. B., Emmott, W., and Brock, D. T., (trading as Automotive Products Co.), and Boughton, E. B. May 6, 1927. Band; fluid-pressure.- Brakes are applied to the landing wheels of aircraft by pressure mainly or wholly produced by, and in propor. tion to, the weight of the aircraft upon the tail skid or other member supporting the rear part of the aircraft on the ground. Means may be provided whereby the pilot may control the pressure, or apply the brakes independently of the tail skid, or cause differential braking of a pair of sheets for steering purposes. Fluid pressure transmission mechanism is described but mechanical transmission may be used. The tail skid b, Fig. 1, is connected through a resilient lost-motion device m, n, o to the piston d<1> of a cylinder d connected by pipes f to the brake cylinders g, reservoir j, pressure indicator k and pilot's control cylinder e, the piston e<1> of which is connected through a, lost motion device n<1>, o<1> to a hand lever c. The brake cylinders g each have opposed pistons g<1> connected to levers g<3>, g<5> connected by a link g<4>, the brake band h being attached to the lever g<3>. The pilot's lever c may be moved to adjust the amount of lost motion in the system or to apply the brakes independently of the skid b. The amount of lost-motion may be such as to prevent application of the brakes by the skid. In an arrangement. Figs. 3 and 4, providing differential braking, separate fluid pressure transmission systems are used for the brakes on the wheels i<1>, the cylinders d being jointly operated by the tail skid b. The pistons e<1> of the control cylinders e are connected respectively by links p to an arm and auxiliary lever s pivoted on the same shaft q as the hand lever c, the arm r and levers c. s being connected by a rod t passing through flared holes in the members c, s. For steering purposes, the lever c is held stationary and the lever s operated to vary the pressure in the two systems.
