Abstract

Foam-formation in aqueous liquids is reduced by incorporating therewith a mixture of a water-soluble organic solvent, other than an alkyl ether of ethylene glycol, and an alcohol or phenol containing at least one open chain of at least five carbon atoms and sparingly soluble in the aqueous liquid. Examples of these substances are, respectively, isopropyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, thiodiglycol, acetone, and amyl alcohol, hexyl alcohol, octyl alcohol, 2-ethyl butanol, 2-ethyl hexanol, amyl phenols. The mixtures are suitable for reducing foam in viscose solutions, fermented liquids, gelatin solutions, liquors for treating textiles, dyebaths, printing pastes, and in the paper industry. The quantity of the mixture used may be, say, 0.01-0.5 per cent in the case of viscose solutions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of ethers of polyhydric alcohols, e.g. ethylene glycol monoether, as the water-soluble solvent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
