556,579. Terpene containing wetting agents. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Hercules Powder Co.). July 23,1941, No. 9334. Sample furnished. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] A terpene composition suitable for use as a wetting agent is prepared by reacting a mixture of pinene with water and a lower aliphatic alcohol with an acid catalyst consisting of a non- carboxylic polybasic acid or its acidic derivatives at a temperature between 0‹C. and 70‹C. Suitable acid catalysts mentioned include phosphoric, sulphuric, benzene sulphonic, toluene sulphonic, ethyl sulphonic, and ethyl sulphuric acids, and sodium and potassium acid sulphates. Other acids such as the strong inorganic acids may also be used. Alcohols mentioned include monohydric alcohols such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, betachloroethyl, chloropropyl, bromoethyl, and bromopropyl, or a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene, propylene, or trimethylene glycol. Substituted alcohols may also be used, provided the alcoholic hydroxyl group is retained. The pinene employed may be either the alpha or beta variety, or a turpentine oil of high pinene content may be used. Suitable turpentines are wood or gum turpentine of either American or French type. Examples are given of the preparation of the composition of the invention which is stated to comprise essentially a mixture of terpineol and the terpinyl ether of the alcohol used. A sample has been filed under Sect. 2 (5) of the Acts, of material boiling between 217‹C. and 240‹C. made by reacting pinene and ethylene glycol in the presence of sulphuric acid.
