Abstract

Textile materials of cellulose acetate having an acetyl value, calculated as combined acetic acid of at least 59 per cent are dyed by applying thereto from an aqueous medium a cellulose acetate disperse dyestuff, particularly a dyestuff of the "high-temperature, slow-dyeing" type, in the presence of an assistant which is a solvent for the dyestuff and is substantive to the cellulose acetate, the use of the assistant greatly increasing the rate of dyeing. The assistant may be added to the aqueous dyebath or the textiles may be pretreated with the assistant, e.g. as by padding with an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of the assistant. Preferred assistants, which may be employed in admixture, are terpene alcohols, e.g. pine oil, and their ethers, such esters as tripropyl-, tributyl-, triamyl-, trihexyl- and dioctyl acid phosphate, dimethyl-, diethyl-, dipropyl- and diallyl-phthalate, triallyl citrate, methyl salicylate, and methyl benzoate and N:N-dihydroxyethyl amides of higher fatty acids such as capric and lauric acids, less suitable assistants being cumene, biphenyl, naphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene, trichlorobenzene, cyclohexyl phenol, o-phenylphenol, salicylic acid, benzoic acid, the monophenyl-, monodichlorophenyl and mono-p-chlorophenyl-ethers of ethylene glycol, the monophenyl ether of diethylene glycol, acetophenone, dibutyl phthalate, 2-methyl-5-ethyl pyridine, decanol, trioctyl phosphates, dipropyl-, dibutyl-, diamyl-, didecyl- and dilauryl-acid phosphates, dibutyl ethanolamine, diisobutyl carbinol and the products known as "Maypon K," "Alkamine W-30," "CRL40229G2125" and "Kar-In." Numerous suitable "high - temperature, slow - dyeing" disperse dyestuffs and some "low or medium temperature" disperse dyestuffs are specified. To reduce the tendency towards acid-fading, the usual nitrogenous inhibitors employed for the treatment of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate, several of which are specified, may be applied to the textile before, during or after dyeing, as also may antioxidants such as tertiary butyl hydroquinone and alkylated phenols. The process is also applicable to textiles containing a mixture of highly acetylated cellulose fibres with fibres of wool, cotton, rayon, glass and asbestos. Examples are given.
