Abstract
Bituminous emulsions suitable for use as road binders contain a small amount of an alkali-metal salt of an oxy-acid of chromium, preferably sodium or potassium dichromate. An oil-in-water type emulsion of a bitumen, preferably asphalt, which has been stabilized by an organic stabilizing agent, contains a small amount, preferably 0.05 to 2.0 per cent by weight of an alkali metal dichromate, preferred stabilizing agents being water-miscible blood, soya bean flour or a resin extracted from pine-wood or the sodium salt of such a resin, and the emulsifying agent may be a saponified resinous material extracted from waste sulphite liquor. A water-in-oil type emulsion may comprise a bituman, preferably asphalt, having dispersed in it an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of an oxy-acid of chromium, preferably an alkali metal dichromate. Specifications 226,032, 254,012 and 288,821, [all in Class 81 (i)], are referred to.ALSO:The bond of a bituminous material to a hydrophylic aggregate is improved by adding a small amount of an alkali-metal salt of an oxy-acid of chromium, preferably sodium or potassium dichromate. In particular, an oil-in-water type emulsion of a bitumen, preferably asphalt, which has been stabilized by an organic stabilizing agent, contains a small amount, preferably 0.05 to 2.0 per cent by weight, of an alkali metal dichromate; or a bitumen, preferably asphalt, has dispersed in it an aquous solution of an alkali metal salt of an oxy-acid of chromium, preferably an alkali metal dichromate.
