Abstract
573,169. Bituminous emulsions. INTERNATIONAL BITUMEN EMULSIONS, Ltd., MONTGOMERIE, J. A., ARCHIBALD, P. K., and BRADSHAW, L. C. Dec. 2, 1943, No. 20187. [Class 1 (i)] A coal tar pitch, having a M.P. greater than 50‹C. and a working fluidity above 100‹C. is emulsified by blending it with a natural asphalt, e.g., Trinidad asphalt, which acts as an assistant emulsifier, and dispersing this blend in hot dilute aqueous alkaline solution, with or without one or more additional assistant emulsifiers, such as bentonite, fatty acid compounds, fatty acid pitches or protein compounds and with or without the presence of an organic salt or salts, e.g., sodium oleate. The natural asphalt may be blended either with the coal tar pitch before addition of the fatty acid or fatty acid pitch, or with the fatty acid or fatty acid pitch before its addition to the coal tar pitch. An example is given in which cresylic acid is added during or after the formation of the emulsion. Specification 462,111 is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the use, as assistant emulsifiers, of fatty acid or a protein compound alone or together with fatty acid pitch with or without an organic salt.
