Abstract
Bituminous emulsions which have been made with the aid of a neutral or alkaline aqueous solution of an alkali soap of solid rosin are stabilized by means of a calcium or like insoluble soap of solid rosin. The calcium soap may be obtained by heating lime with rosin, if desired in presence of a flux such as excess rosin or fuel oil, or it may be obtained by the action of a calcium salt on a solution of alkali rosin soap. It may be added to the bitumen before or after emulsification and in the latter case may be obtained by decomposing the alkali rosin soap used as emulsifying agent, or both these methods may be employed in sequence. A wood rosin is preferred for both the soluble and insoluble soaps. According to examples: (1) 100 parts of rosin and 3,75 parts of hydrated lime are heated at 140 DEG C. until homogeneous and dissolved in an equal weight of fuel oil. 4 Parts of this solution are added to 100 parts of bitumen and the mixture is dispersed in N /20 potassium rosinate solution to give 57 per cent bitumen content; (2) the product of (1) is treated with sufficient 10 per cent calcium chloride solution to decompose the potassium rosinate.
