Abstract

Fibrous or porous materials such as leather are waterproofed and hides or skins are tanned by impregnation with a colloidal solution made by emulsifying with water a 5 per cent solution of rubber in any of the fractions obtained in rectifying crude rubber distillate over the range 140 to 320 DEG C. The crude rubber distillate after washing with alkali, decanting, washing with an acid such as sulphuric acid, again decanting and washing with water, is rectified in the presence of calcium chloride or an alkali such as lime and caustic soda. The emulsions may be made (1) by dissolving rubber, vulcanized or not, or latex, in the distillate, adding a resin such as a molten condensation product, a gum, a cellulose derivative solution or an emulsion of dextrine, maltose or gelose together with an organic tanning agent and emulsifying with water; (2) by emulsifying the rubber distillate in an aqueous solution of a chromium salt or a synthetic tanning agent, adding rubber dissolved in the distillate and agitating, for example, in a fulling mill; (3) as in (1) or (2) the tanning agent or chromium salt being replaced by an alkali or oil such as sodium sulphoricinate as emulsifying agent; (4) as in (2) using water in place of the solution of chromium salt.
