[Class 83 (iv)] To avoid holes or unevenness in welding a work-piece with carbon content greater than 0.015 per cent an oxidizing coating which would give rise to holes when used in combination with a core containing 0.1 per cent carbon is used with a core containing less than 0.05 per cent carbon. A core comprising iron known under the Registered Trade Mark " Armco," and containing 0.05-0.01 per cent carbon coated with a mixture of 70 per cent iron oxide, quartz, kaolin, dolomite &c. and bound with water-glass, may be used for welding workpieces containing up to 0.2-0.25 per cent carbon.
