In electric arc-welding in a gas shield of inert gas carbon dioxide or the like with a bare electrode, the electrode is an uncoated wire treated during its manufacture with a drawing compound consisting of borax and/or aluminium stearate. The wire may be of the following composition : 0.09-0.15% carbon 0.9-1.2% manganese, 0.35-0.5% or 0.6- 0.8% silicon, up to 0.035% sulphur, up to 0.03% phosphorus, remainder iron, or of stainless steel.
