Abstract
535,355. Arc welding electrodes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1939, No. 32950. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1938. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] The moisture resistance of the flux coating of an arc welding electrode containing sodium silicate is improved by the addition of precipitated magnesium carbonate up to 10 per cent. of the sodium silicate. The flux may consist of : Alpha flock (pulverant cellulose) 8 parts, Ti O 2 4 parts, asbestos 4 parts, ferro-manganese 4 parts precipitated magnesium carbonate 1 part, liquid sodium silicate (1 : 3.25 ratio) 22 parts. The electrode is used with direct current, reversed polarity. In a modification, ferromolybdenum 4 parts may also be added. The flux may be used with a mild steel electrode containing carbon 10 to 15, manganese .45 to .65, phosphorus .04 max., and sulphur .05 max. The ferro-manganese preferably contains manganese 78-82 per cent., carbon 5.5-6.5 per cent., silicon 2-5 per cent., phosphorus .1 per cent. The ferromolybdenum preferably contains 60 per cent. molybdenum. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 363,921 and 409,293, [both in Group XXII].
