Abstract

513,313. Fluxes ; uniting by fusion. ASEA ELECTRIC, Ltd., and FITCH, S. Feb. 7, 1938, No. 3830. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A flux of the type used in carbon arc welding is mixed with a vegetable oil such as raw or boiled linseed oil, almond oil, olive oil, rape oil, cotton oil, mustard oil or tung oil, with or without the addition of driers. The mixture may be applied to a filler wire and dried. For welding low carbon iron and mild steel, a flux mixture may consist of one to five parts of raw or boiled linseed oil containing up to 50 per cent. of terebine, and one to five parts by weight of powdered flux. For welding mild steel, sheet iron, cast iron and cast steel, a flux may comprise 1.25 parts of asbestos powder, 1.5 parts of clay, and 1 part each of zirconium silicate, rutile, ferro-manganese and sodium silicate ; about 40 per cent. of the above linseed oil and terebine is added. This flux when used for welding thick plate has added thereto 40 per cent. of linseed oil without drier.
