Abstract

Uniting by fusion.-In order to produce a reducing-atmosphere, the coating of an iron or iron-alloy electrode for welding iron or steel contains the carbonate of a heavy metal or metals, the oxides of which have a comparatively low melting point, and carbon or carbonaceous material. The coating may comprise iron, nickel or manganous carbonate, and coke or anthracite. Mixtures are also described comprising chalk, ferrous, nickel or manganous carbonate, and lamp black respectively. The outer electrode coating, which may be coloured, is made of precipitated chalk bound with glue or silicate of soda, and may contain a reducing-agent such as dextrine.
