Abstract

550,710. Alloys; electric furnaces. POKORNY, E. A. July 19, 1941, No. 9151. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XI] Low carbon ferroalloys such as ferrochromium or ferromanganese are made by reducing in a single-phase arc furnace a mixture of oxygen compounds of the metals and a non-carbonaceous reducing agent such as silicon or aluminium or their alloys, the furnace having a bottom electrode consisting of the carbon-free alloy itself and an upper graphite electrode. In the form shown, the furnace is divided into two compartments communicating by channels g, some low-carbon ferro-alloy which is to form the bottom electrode being introduced into the part d which is provided with a cooling coil i, whereby in use the bottom electrode may be maintained partly solid and partly molten. Reduction takes place in the part e wherein is the movable electrode c. The electrode b may be of carbon or metal, and may be embedded in the metal; or the coil i may be used as the electrode.
