Abstract
A solution consisting of 15 per cent of polyvinyl chloride in 85 per cent of xylene or toluene is mixed to paste from with a powdered flux consisting of 45 per cent of titanium oxide, 10 per cent of kaolin, 15 per cent of ferromanganese, 10 per cent of felspar, 10 per cent of magnesite, 5 per cent of anhydrous sodium silicate, and 5 per cent of magnetic oxide of iron and applied to the steel core of an arcwelding electrode by extrusion or dipping. After drying, the surface is coated with a layer of polyvinyl chloride from a solution containing 15 per cent of polyvinyl chloride and 5 per cent of a plasticizer such as equal parts of dibutyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate in 80 per cent of benzene or toluene. The polyvinyl chloride may be replaced by polyvinyl acetate, styrene, polymethyl acrylate or methacrylate. Specifications 513,267, 553,553 and 559,033, [Group XI], are referred to.
