Abstract

An arc welding or cutting electrode is provided with a flux coating characterised in that it contains ferromanganese poor in carbon 25 to 40 per cent, quartz 20 to 30 per cent, kaolin 0 to 10 per cent, siderite (iron carbonate) 30 to 50 per cent in addition to a binder preferably of sodium silicate; or, a coating comprising: SiO2 23 to 50 per cent; Al2O3 0 to 5 per cent; FeO (from metallic iron) 2 to 11 per cent; FeO (from iron compounds) 14 to 25 per cent; CO2 (from carbonate) 8 to 17 per cent; MnO (from metallic manganese) 22 to 49 per cent; Na2O 1 to 4 per cent. Such an electrode has a crater forming influence so that in welding with normal arc length the arc voltage may exceed 50 volts, preferably exceeding 55 to 60 volts. The coating, when using inorganic substances may comprise 60 to 75 per cent of the weight of the coated portion of the electrode and 30-50 per cent in the case of organic coatings such as cellulose wood flour starch, dextrine or carbohydrates. The coating may contain substances developing hydrogen gas such as hydrocarbons and may also contain ferro-alloys such as ferro-manganese containing 6 to 7 per cent of carbon. With such an electrode deep penetration of the work may be obtained, the high voltage being obtained without increasing the normal arc length, deep craters being formed on the electrode end and in the work. Butt welding may be effected on thick plates without bevelling and the diameter of the case may be from 3 to 5 mms., particularly 4 mms. One coating may consist of 25 to 40 per cent of ferro-manganese (poor in carbon) 20-30 per cent of quartz, 0 to 10 per cent of kaolin, 30 to 50 per cent of siderite together with 50 to 100 grams of sodium silicate to one kilogram of the mixture. Dextrine may alternatively be used as the binder. When used for cutting, the ferro-manganese should be rich in carbon. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the coating may contain Cr2O3. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
