Abstract

631,957. Hinged valves. AIR CONTROL INSTALLATIONS, Ltd., and BURGIN, J. Oct. 3, 1946, No. 29568. [Class 135] A butterfly-type valve for an air or gas conduit comprises a shaft 21 encircled by, and secured to, a tube 27 and rotatably mounted in bearings in the sides of the duct, rigid blades 13, 15 extending tangentially from the ends of a diameter of the tube, and rigid ledges 53, 57 constituting sealing abutments which are secured in parallel planes to the inner walls of the conduit and are spaced apart by an amount corresponding to the diametral separation of the blades. In the embodiment shown, a single rectangular passage is divided by a central partition 25 into two passageways, each of which is provided with a valve. The blades can be swung into the open position shown in dot-and-dash lines. The sealing abutments comprise U-shaped members bolted to the sides of the passageways and covered by asbestos cloth 55. In a modification, asbestos fabric is interposed between the members 53 and the walls to which they are attached, and the edges of the members 53 on which the blades 13, 15 seat are provided with blocks of asbestos encased in silicon rubber and gripped by channel members. When the gas being controlled is of a dusty nature, an aperture in the partition 25 permits any dust accumulating to be blown away. The blades 13, 15 are braced by webs 63, and steel sheets may be fitted over the webs to minimize flow losses.
