824,390. Axial-flow blowers. BRUNNER, K. Jan. 23, 1957 [Feb. 8, 1956], No. 2370/57. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group IX] In a travelling blower for textile machinery with separate downwardly and upwardly directed air guides and two concentric sets of impeller vanes, closable apertures are provided between the pressure chamber of the section of the blower housing to which the downwardly directed air guide is connected and the suction chamber of the section associated with the upwardly directed air guide, the downwardly directed air guide being adapted to be throttled. The travelling blower shown is mounted on rollers 34 to run on tracks 35 and comprises an impeller having an inner set of vanes 5 and an outer set of vanes 7. The vanes 5 draw in air through baffles 23, thereby cooling the driving motor 2, and discharge it upwardly through the annular space between baffles 13 and 14. The baffle 13 may be so mounted that it can be offset eccentrically within the baffle 14 to concentrate the annular discharge. The vanes 7 discharge downwardly through nozzles each comprising a swivel joint 9 and telescopic sections 24 and ending in an adjustable orifice formed by two pivoted halves 31, 32. The sections 24, which can be locked into position by clamps 25, may be curved instead of straight so that when they are drawn out they can be turned relatively to one another to bring the discharge orifice to the required position. Further swivel joints 9 and branch pipes may be arranged between sections 24. Throttle valves 22, pivoted about the same axis as the joints 9, allow the flow through each nozzle to be reduced or cut off, the excess air thereby made available pushing open valves 18 and flowing into the suction chamber of the vanes 5 to augment the upwardly directed air stream. Imbricated non- return valves 12 are provided at the suction side of the vanes 7. The valves 18 may also be of imbricated form. The vanes 7 may be mounted separately from the vanes 5 and driven by a separate motor located within the baffle 13. In a modification, the vanes 7 are directly driven by the motor 2 while the vanes 5 are driven through a reverted train of reduction gearing.
