[Class 130.] In a suction device for conveying cut tobacco to cigarette-making machines, a number of separators 2, each disposed above the spreader 1 of a cigarette-making machine and connected to a main air-discharge pipe 6, are in communication with a common inlet conduit supplied from a single tobacco charging table 10. As shown in Fig. 1 the separators 2 are connected to the main discharge pipe 6 and suction fan 5 by pipes 4 provided with throttle valves 7. The separators are connected by branch pipes 8, 11 to a main pipe 9 leading from the table 10 change-over devices 13 being provided at the branching-off points, so that any one of the pipes 8 can be connected to the pipe 9. Each device 13 consists of a pair of flaps pivoted at 14 and connected by a link 12. In a modification, the pipes 8 are each connected directly to the main pipe 9 through a change-over member such as 13. In another form, Fig. 3, the change-over member is a rotary valve 16 having conduits 18, 19 ; the valve can be turned so that the conduit 18 connects the main pipe 9 with one of the pipes 8<a>, 8<d>, or the conduit 19 connects the main pipe with one of the pipes 8<b>, 8<c>. In a further form, Fig. 4, the pipes 8 open into a casing 20 fitted with a pair of connected guide members 21, pivoted at 22 and forming with the side walls of the casing 20 a conduit which is connected by a flexible tube 23 to the main 9, and can be turned into communication with any of the pipes 8 leading to the separators.
