Abstract

524,985. Drying webs. McDOWELL, Ltd., T., and McDOWELL, T. Jan. 10, 1939, No. 853. [Class 34 (i)] In drying apparatus for webs of. paper or cloth comprising ar arcuate gas supply conduit extending along the web on a cylinder 14 and in communicatior with transverse gas outlets 22 spaced along the web and gas exhaus means connected to a casing 20 at the outer sides of the web, the gas supply fan 60 is placed remote from the casing and is connected to the arcuate casing at points spaced along its length by ducts 34, 36 which have baffles 46 so that the gas supply is either uniform or can be varied to different parts of the web. The arcuate conduit is divided into sections 30 - 32 each with supply ducts 38 connected to ducts 10, 12 on opposite sides of the conduit delivering air to transverse slotted tubes 22 which may be closed by a central partition 24. The pipes 34, 36 are connected to a common supply conduit 64 with a heater 66, air being supplied to the fan either from the exterior or from the exhaust duct 50 connected by branches 52 to the sections of the conduit, or partly from each under the control of baffles 70, 74. A separate exhaust fan 78 may draw used gas from the duct 50 to a discharge pipe 82. In one form, the ducts 34, 36 50 may be placed together and be constituted by a horizontal trunk divided longitudinally by vertical partition walls, and communicate as before with sections of the arcuate conduit. In another form, the exhaust duct lies centrally on the arcuate conduit and the 'supply ducts 34, 36 lie one on the top towards each side of the arcuate conduit, and are in communication therewith by apertures in each section thereof. The outlet end of the exhaust duct lies on the tranverse end of the supply duct, and hinged valves control the supply of gas to different parts of the web and the amount to be recirculated.
