Abstract
630,100. Electric irons. WILKINSON, G. H., DIVALL, R. W., and METCALFE, C. July 31, 1946, Nos. 16598/47, (divided out of 630,077), and 33662/46. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A thermostatically-controlled electrically-heated iron in which the thermostat may be set to operate at a predetermined temperature, is provided with a warning lamp 10 adapted to be energised when the temperature of the sole plate 1 of the iron exceeds that at which the thermostat is set. A bimetal strip 9 is disposed in a recess 8 in the sole plate 1, the free end of the bimetal being secured by a rod 27 to the centre one 14 of three metallic blades 13, 14, and 15, all fixed at one end in a terminal block, and at their free ends carrying contacts 31, 30, and 32 respectively. The blades 13 and 15 are joined together at their free ends by an insulating plate 33 having a rearwardly extending lug 34 cooperating with a cam 37 on a shaft 38 having a knob 39, whereby the operating temperature of the thermostat may be pre-determined. Contacts 31 and 30 are normally closed, the heating element 2 being then energised, and a signal lamp (not shown) being short-circuited. As the bimetal strip 9 curls, blade 14 is allowed to rise, and so open the heating circut, the signal lamp then glowing, it being shunted across the supply terminals. Should then the thermostat be set to operate at a lower temperature while the iron is still hot, the blades 13 and 15 will be depressed, and contacts 30 and 32 will close to cause warning lamp 40 to glow. The two lamps are preferably neon tubes each in series with a small condenser.
