Abstract

627,130. Electric glass melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. May 7, 1947, Nos. 12388 and 12389. Convention dates, May 7, 1946 and May 9, 1946. [Class 39 (iii)] In a glass smelting furnace having electrodes 11, 12 projecting into the molten mass through the vertical walls 2, 3 of the furnace, the electrodes are arranged on such non-intersecting axes that a perpendicular common to two co-operating electrodes can be drawn only in a restricted region c b Fig. 6, or at one point only, of each electrode, whereby an unequal distribution of current intensity is obtained along the length of the electrode with a maximum intensity in the region where the common perpendicular can be drawn. Co-operating electrodes may be arranged with their axes in the same horizontal or vertical plane, their axes being normal to or inclined with the furnace walls. Alternatively the axes of co-operating electrodes are inclined with one another about a vertical or a horizontal axis x y Fig. 10 located within the furnace. Co-operating electrodes may project through the same or opposite furnace walls, but in the latter case the sum of their projected lengths upon a line perpendicular to the said walls is greater than the distance there between.
