Abstract
627,099. Modulating-systems. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 13, 1947, No. 7042. Convention date, March 22, 1946. [Class 40 (v)] A modulation process consists of passing a a strip of film or other material in front of a slit in a cavity resonator which is fed with U.H.F. energy. The invention is especially applicable to cinema sound apparatus. In Fig. 3, a magnetron oscillator 10 feeds energy along guide 9 into a cavity resonator 4 which is terminated by two conducting sheets having slits 3 and 3<1>. The characteristic impedance of slit 3 is varied by passing a film strip 1 in front of this slit. The strip may consist of ordinary sound film, or may be specially manufactured from metallized dielectric ribbon or from a plastic material, the thickness of which is made to vary as the sound intensity by a moulding process. Energy in resonator 4 is thereby amplitude-modulated, and is supplied from. slit 31 to transmission horn 13.. The associated receiving aerial and apparatus may be located behind the cinema screen. Fig. 2 shows a suitable guide to enable the film to slide in front of slit 3. The U-shaped pieces 7 and 8 are made a quarter of a wavelength long to avoid energy leakage. An alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) is also described in which the strip is passed in front of a slit which connects the main resonator with an auxiliary cavity resonator. A modified form of slit is also described which is shaped as described in Specification 608,254, [Group XL (b)]
