Abstract

624,298. Gas turbine plant. FLETCHER, A. H. June 30, 1947, No. 17225. [Class 110(iii)] In a gas turbine plant for ship-propulsion the pipes connecting the two air-compressor stages are used as members of a rigid structure supporting part of the plant. In the plant shown, air from an intake 11 passes to a low-pressure compressor 12 which delivers to two interstage coolers 12a. The air is transferred to the high-pressure compressor 20 by two parallel pipes 18, one on either side of the plant. The compressed air passes by three pipes 24 to a heat-exchanger 14 and returns to three combustion chambers 26 and the turbine 27. The turbine exhaust passes through the exchanger 14 and is led by three pipes 29 to reheat chambers 30 and the low-pressure turbine 12b which drives the low-pressure compressor 12. The turbine 27 has separate high-pressure and intermediate rotors. The former drives the high-pressure compressor 20 and the latter drives the propeller shaft 34 through first and second reduction gears 31, 33 and three flexible interconnection shafts 32. The pipes 18 are rigidly connected to one another by integral struts 36 and to the high-pressure unit by flanged joints 23. The pipes have flexible connections 21 with the air coolers 12a. The heat-exchanger 14 is carried by the structure by means of two cross-trunnions 40 supported in brackets 39 and an axial trunnion 42 supported in a frame 43 pivoted to the cross-strut 36. The heat-exchanger has flexible connections with the reheat chambers 30. The rigid supporting structure, comprising the pipes 18, the pipes 19 and the high-pressure compressor 20, is mounted on two brackets 38 and a central ball-joint 45. In a modification, the high-pressure compressor is mounted on its own supports and the rigid frame which carries the heatexchanger has flexible connections with the pipes 19.
