Abstract

794,991. Centrifugal compressors; gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Jan. 30,1956 [Feb. 16, 1955], No. 4612/55. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). Two centrifugal compressors are connected together for series flow and mounted on parallel shafts, the compressors being mechanically connected by a single gear train with a shaft of a rotary power-converting element and arranged alongside each other so that the compressed gas output of one can be fed directly into the other. Centrifugal compressors 19, 20 are driven through parallel shafts 17, 18 and gearing 16 by a gas turbine 14. Compressor 19. discharges through a scroll 22 directly into the eye of compressor 20. An intercooler may be provided at the outlet end of the scroll 22, and air may be tapped off from the scroll. Flexible couplings may be provided in one or both of the shafts 17, 18, and the compressors 19, 20 may be driven at slightly different speeds. Compressor 20 delivers the air to an outlet duct 23. Air is supplied to the compressor 19 through a duct 21 by a centrifugal compressor 10 which is driven by a separate two-stage gas turbine 13 and also supplies air to a combustion chamber 12. Another embodiment comprises a first-stage centrifugal compressor connected by gearing 16 and shafts 17, 18 to compressors 19, 20, all three compressors being driven by an electric motor.
