Abstract

653,285. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 16, 1948, No. 19212. [Class 110(iii)] A gas turbine 13 and air-compressors 10, 11 are secured to opposite sides of a central supporting casing 20. Trunnions 21 on the casing 20 are mounted in spherical bearings on pedestals 22 which are secured to a part 23 of a ship or other supporting structure. Angular movement about the trunnion axis is prevented by a link 45 and angular adjustment is obtained by means of shims 47. The assembly can be adjusted in the direction of the trunnion axis by turning a shaft 48 which is normally locked in the casing 20. The end of the shaft 48 is eccentric and engages a block slidable vertically in a guide 57 secured to the structure 23. The plant shown is the high-pressure unit of a ship's propulsion plant. The first turbine rotor 13a drives the compressors and the other rotors 13b, 13c drive the propellers through reduction gearing 18 and shafts 19. The shaft 14 of the rotor 13a is coupled to the compressor shaft 12 by a muff 43 splined to the ends of both shafts. The shaft 15 of the rotors 13b, 13c is similarly coupled by a muff 44 to the drive shaft 16. The muffs are normally free of the casing 20, but when the turbine and compressor, with their shafts, are withdrawn the casing holds the muffs in position for the re-entry of the shafts. Air from the low-pressure unit is received by two ducts 27, with flexible couplings 26 and passes to the cavity 24 of the casing 20 and thence to the compressor 10. It passes from the compressor 10 by a pipe 36 to an interstage cooler and thence to the compressor 11 by a pipe 37. From the compressor 11 the air goes by a pipe 40 to an air-preheater and then to two combustion chambers 42 which deliver to the turbine. The drive 34 for the plant auxiliaries is carried by the casing 20. Specification 624,298 is referred to.
