583,469. Turbo-compressors. SMITH, D. M., LLOYD, C. G., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 4, 1943, No. 161. [Class 110 (i)] A turbo-compressor has low-pressure, intermediate and high-pressure groups of bladings, the blading of the low- and high-pressure groups are mounted for movement relative to one another and the intermediate group and are coupled by a differential torque balancing gear so that, for a pressure ratio greater than the designed ratio, the relative velocity between the bladings of the low-pressure group is increased and that between the bladings of the high-pressure group is correspondingly decreased and, for a pressure ratio less than the designed ratio an opposite adjustment is made. In Fig. 1, blades rO and r1 are carried by rotors RO and R1 which are mounted on bearings BO and B1 and are coupled by a differential gear M, L, L<1>, M\ A contrarotating shell may be provided in place of the stator S. In Fig. 5, there is only one rotor R and the low- and high-pressure stator blades sO, s1 are carried by shells SO, S1 which are mounted on bearings B, B<1> and are coupled by gears T, Q, Q<1>, U, T\ the shaft O being mounted in stationary bearings P. In a contra-rotational radial compressor, Fig. 6, the intermediate rotors 4, 4<1> have projecting parts 10, 10<1> secured to arms or discs 1a, 1<1>a on the driving shafts 1, 1<1> and gear wheels 8, 8<1> mounted on the parts 10, 10<1> gear with toothings on the low-and high-pressure rotors 5, 5<1> and 6, 6<1>.
