Abstract
775,548. Centrifugal and axial flow blower or pump. BUCHI, A: June 9, 1953 [July 12, 1952], No. 32794/56. Divided out of 775,547. Class 110 (1). In a vane wheel blower or pump plant arranged in a common housing comprising oppositely running low and high pressure vane wheels of at least one stage which act successively on the fluid and are mounted on coaxial shafts geared together and one shaft of which contains part of the other, the high pressure vane wheel includes a radially discharging final stage, the low pressure vane wheel comprises axial flow vanes of smaller overall diameter than the final stage and the gearing is of such ratio that the vanes of the low pressure stage rotate faster than the radially discharging final stage. The blower or pump shown, Fig. 1, comprises a radial flow wheel 9 which rotates in the opposite direction to an axial flow wheel positioned at its inlet. The compressor driving shaft 5 is supported radially at 21 and radially and axially 28. This shaft carries two axial flow vane systems 2, 2<SP>1</SP> which coact with two stationary axial flow vane systems 2 1 , 2 1 <SP>1</SP> mounted in the housing 14<SP>1</SP>. The shaft 8 which is mounted on a bearing 61 and a bearing 211 carried by the shaft S, has the rotor 9 connected to it by a key 10 and a nut 9<SP>2</SP>. The shaft 8 is driven from the shaft 5 by reduction gearing 31, 32, 33, 34 so that the rotor 9 rotates at a lower speed than the axial flow wheels 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and in the opposite direction thereto. A pressure balancing piston 16 is also provided. In a modification, Fig. 2, the rotor 9 has its blades 11 completely shrouded and the shroud is extended in the axial direction over the blades 2, 2<SP>1</SP> to carry the blades 2 2 , 2 2 <SP>1</SP>, which then rotate in the opposite direction to the blades 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. In a further modification, the blades 11 are connected by an annular flange only at the outer edges of the leading edges of the blades. This flange is extended axially to carry the blades 2 1 , 2 1 <SP>1</SP>.
