Abstract
282,113. Soc. Rateau. Dec. 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Multi-stage pumps and turbines.-Centrifugal compressors and other rotary apparatus such as turbines, have a number of rotors mounted between bearings and one or more rotors overhung on the shaft in order to raise the critical speed of the shaft. -The compressor shown in Fig. 1 has five rotors a mounted on the shaft between the bearings b and the shaft is driven by a turbine e through a flexible coupling d. There are two overhung rotors c and the two sections of the compressor have separate entry and discharge pipes. The rotors may have radial vanes of the type described in Specification 231,165. In a modification the overhung rotors are on the end of the shaft by the coupling d and a thrust bearing is provided at the other end. In another modification a bilateral rotor a', Fig. 3, is arranged between the bearings, and the intake g of an overhung rotor c is connected to the discharge from the rotor a<1>. The fluid passing from one section of the pump to the other may be passed through a refrigerant.
