[Cognate Applications, 10,412/12 and 11,283/12.] Axial-flow type; oppositelyrunning rotor type; casings; rotors; reversing.-Relates to turbines with axial flow and screw fans and pumps of the turbine type, and consists in building up the machine by assembling a number of longitudinal sections. A turbine of the type having oppositelyrunning rotors comprises an inner rotor formed from a number of flanged disks f, Fig. 1, bolted together and secured to a shaft m. To each disk, a ring of blades h is secured. If required, each ring of blades may be provided with a shroud n. The outer rotor comprises a number of rings c, secured together by bolts d, each ring carrying a set of blades g, the inner ends of which are secured to disks e. The lengths of the blades increase progressively from inlet to exhaust, and the blades g, h rotate in opposite directions. The oppositelyrotating parts are geared together by epicyclic gearing w carried by a part v. Fluid is admitted through the hollow shaft m to a chamber p, whence it flows through the blades to a chamber t and exhausts through ports x. A cover a and exhaust-pipe b are shown in dotted lines. In a modification, each of the oppositely-rotating members is mounted upon a shaft provided with a loose pulley and clutch mechanism, whereby power can be taken off either shaft alternatively. In a. further modification, the rings c and blades g are stationary, the shaft m being divided into two parts, one of which carries the rotor and the other the stator. In a pump of the turbine type, the stator is supported by a stationary shaft k, Fig. 11, while the rotor is secured to a shaft 10. Fluid enters the hollow shaft k and passes through perforations 9 to the chamber 8, whence it is pumped through to the chamber p, being finally discharged through the hollow shaft 10.
