Abstract

623,426. Torsional vibration-dampers. JACK & HEINTZ PRECISION INDUSTRIES, Inc. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36185. Convention date, Jan. 5. [Class 108 (iii)] A vibration damping device for a rotary shaft 2, comprises a pair of discs or blocks 8, 9, mounted between a pair of members 4, 7 rigid with the shaft 2, so as to be driven by frictional engagement thereby with predetermined slippage and centrifugally responsive steel balls 12 located between the discs 8, 9 and adapted to move radially outward in engagement with co-operating inclined faces on the discs so that the discs are separated proportionately to an increase in the speed of the shaft. In the construction shown, the shaft 2 of a generator 1 is driven by an engine crankshaft (not shown), and is in splined engagement with a collar 3 having a flanged portion comprising the member 4. A sleeve 6 keyed to the shaft 2 has a flanged portion comprising the member 7. The discs 8, 9 comprise circular blocks of cast iron and are urged by springs 10 into engagement with the flanges 7, 4 respectively. The steel balls 12 are carried in spherical sockets 11 in the blocks 8, 9 and cause a further spreading of the blocks due to centrifugal force. Lubrication passages 13, 14, 15 and an oil seal 16 are provided.
