Abstract

331,505. Ricardo, H. R. April 2, 1929. Flywheels.-Torsional oscillations in the crankshafts of fluid-pressure engines, pumps or compressors are damped by an annular inertia mass H frictionally mounted on one or more flying or other crank-webs C of circular cross-section centred on the axis of the crankshaft. Two or more spring rings L position the mass and provide frictional contact, and radial holes M facilitate compression of the rings for removal of the mass when desired. An annular space J between the crank-web C and the mass H is sealed by the rings L and contains lubricating oil which is circulated through passages in the crankshaft, thereby constituting a centrifugal separator for the oil, the pressure of which is also useful in exerting a side thrust on the rings, thereby increasing friction between the connected members. The rings may be pegged to the crank-web to prevent their relative rotation and the side thrust may be further increased by the provision of separate springs.
