Abstract

623,156. Elastic-fluid turbines. YATES, H. G., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. April 22, 1947, No. 10766. [Class 110(iii)] Means for coupling inlet piping to the rotor casing of an elastic-fluid turbine comprises a sleeve element yieldably supported at its two ends and an inner slidable sleeve for controlling the opening and closing at will of ports communicating with the outflow space. A sleeve a extends between the rotor casing c and the flange b of the inlet pipe. Piston rings f provide a fluid-tight connection. An inner sleeve e co-operates with ports d in the sleeve a to form a byepass valve communicating with the outflow space g, and is actuated by a power piston (not shown) which may be operated by air or the turbine working- fluid. In an application to a gas turbine plant in which one turbine drives the compressor or compressors and exhausts to a power turbine, either directly or through a combustion chamber, the valve is used to byepass the power turbine, and is preferably arranged to open downwardly under its own weight when starting.
