Abstract
Substituted ureas are prepared by condensing primary monoamines, or hydrazine, with carbon dioxide at elevated temperatures, e.g. 150-250 DEG C. and pressures, e.g. 50-1500 atmos. optionally in the presence of a solvent such as water, ethanol, phenol or benzene. Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic monoamines may be used either in their free states or as their carbonates, amines mentioned being: methyl-, ethyl-, n-butyl- and b -hydroxyethylamine, aniline, p-chloraniline, b -phenylethylamine and 2-aminopyridine. With monoamines the condensation occurs between two molecules of amine and one of carbon dioxide with the elimination of one molecule of water and with hydrazine two molecules of hydrazine condense with two molecules of carbon dioxide to eliminate two molecules of water to give 1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-3,6-diketo-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. Mixed ureas may be obtained by using a mixture of amines. In examples: (1) carbanilide; (2) N,N1-dimethyl-; (3) N,N1-di-n-butyl- and (4) bis-b -hydroxyethyl-urea are obtained from aniline, aqueous methylamine, n-butylamine and mono - ethanolamine, respectively. The tetrakis-p-nitrobenzoyl derivative of bis-b -hydroxyethylurea is also prepared. Specification 321,566, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
